The Indian government funds mosques using money appropriated from temples. Declaring the Jama Masjid a protected monument would mean that it would be controlled by the Archaeological Survey of India.

The PM had ‘‘instructed the Ministry of Culture and ASI to complete the repairs at Jama Masjid within a specified time-frame’’. ‘‘It has also been decided by the Ministry of Culture not to declare Jama Masjid as a protected monument under the Ancient Monuments Act,’’ it said.

ASI counsel Sanjay Jain informed the division bench of the letter. The bench asked how the decision was taken when the matter was sub-judice. ‘‘If it is not declared a protected monument, why should the government spend money on it?’’ the bench said.
